Senate Offer: Draft Proclamation for Special Session

Yesterday, Senate President Andy Gardiner sent a draft call for a special session of the Florida Legislature to convene on June 1st and to conclude on June 20th to Speaker Steve Crisafulli. President Gardiner believes beginning on June 1st would give the feds an adequate opportunity to respond to the Senate’s plan for additional health care funding to low-income, uninsured Floridians and to allow Governor Rick Scott enough time to review the budget prior to July 1st. Click here to read the full letter.

Senate Democrats File Lawsuit Against House

Late yesterday, Senate Democrats filed an emergency petition with the Florida Supreme Court for a writ of mandamus to determine whether the House and Speaker Crisafulli violated the Florida Constitution by adjourning for more than 72 hours without concurrent resolution.

The Supreme Court ordered the House to respond to the lawsuit by 10 am Friday and said Democrats would have the option to respond by 12:30 pm. Click here to read the full emergency petition.

Speaker Crisafulli Responds to Lawsuit

Speaker Crisafulli released a statement in response to the lawsuit filed by 13 Senate Democrats stating that he strongly disagrees with the arguments in the lawsuit and believes the House’s actions to adjourn on Tuesday was constitutional.

He has no plans to ask members to return to Tallahassee before the end of regularly scheduled session today. The House plans to file a formal response this afternoon. Click here to read the statement.
